Notes and Reminders:
Weekly Overview of Assignments In reading this week students will use context clues and prefixes/suffixes to define vocabulary. We will continue reading our class novel, Out of My Mind, students will complete reading comprehension activities paired with the book. We will also begin weekly spelling activities. At the end of each week students will take a spelling test. In writing we will continue opinion writing. The class will read a debate article about whether mummies should be in museums or not. Students will identify elements of Opinion/Argumentative Writing in the text, and use the article to think about what side they would take. In Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. In this week’s lessons, students will use a length or number-line model to recognize or generate equivalent fractions. They will also generalize their work with visual fraction models to explain why a fraction is equivalent to another. Lastly, students use mathematical models to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators to justify reasoning. In Science the class will continue learning about the types, causes, and dangers of landslides. In the activity, Slide City, students are faced with the engineering problems of protecting a house from a landslide and preventing a landslide from happening. They use a brainstorming technique to design creative solutions. In Social Studies the class will continue studying the five themes of geography; Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, Regions. Students will also begin to learn about our country’s states and capitals. Homework
