Hello Room 209 Students and Families, I hope everyone has a lovely long weekend, and for those of you who celebrate- a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families! Notes and Reminders:
Weekly Overview of Assignments In reading students will focus on differentiating between main ideas and supporting details. We will continue reading our class novel, Out of My Mind, students will complete reading comprehension activities paired with the book. In writing we will continue opinion writing. The class will read a debate article about whether or not there are too many holidays. Students will identify elements of Opinion/Argumentative Writing in the text, and use the article to think about what side they would take. In Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. In this week’s lessons, students use mathematical models to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators to justify reasoning. We will also compare fractions in number stories, and learn strategies to order fractions and place them accurately on the number lines. In Science the class will begin a new unit, where students investigate structures and functions of the human body. They will explore how our bones and muscles are interconnected, how our eyes interact with light and impact our vision, and how our brain responds to stimuli in our environment. In Social Studies the class will identify the US Regions, and begin studying the states of the West. Homework

Weekly Overview of Assignments With the short week, we will carry over our lessons and review concepts from the previous week. In reading will use context clues and prefixes/suffixes to define vocabulary. We will continue reading our class novel, Out of My Mind, students will complete reading comprehension activities paired with the book. In writing we will continue opinion writing. The class will read a debate article about whether mummies should be in museums or not. Students will identify elements of Opinion/Argumentative Writing in the text, and use the article to think about what side they would take. In Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. In this week’s lessons, review equivalent fractions. Students will also solve number stories involving fractions. In Science the class we will complete two mini “Mystery Science” lessons. In one lesson, students learn why in some bird species the male looks so different from the female. In another, students learn why people eat turkey on Thanksgiving. In Social Studies the class will continue studying the five themes of geography; Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, Regions. Students will also begin to learn about our country’s states and capitals. Homework

At the end of each week students will take a spelling test. In writing we will continue opinion writing. The class will read a debate article about whether mummies should be in museums or not. Students will identify elements of Opinion/Argumentative Writing in the text, and use the article to think about what side they would take. In Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. In this week’s lessons, students will use a length or number-line model to recognize or generate equivalent fractions. They will also generalize their work with visual fraction models to explain why a fraction is equivalent to another. Lastly, students use mathematical models to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators to justify reasoning. In Science the class will continue learning about the types, causes, and dangers of landslides. In the activity, Slide City, students are faced with the engineering problems of protecting a house from a landslide and preventing a landslide from happening. They use a brainstorming technique to design creative solutions. In Social Studies the class will continue studying the five themes of geography; Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, Regions. Students will also begin to learn about our country’s states and capitals. Homework

As you may have heard, a few more classrooms at Ray have gone remote this week due to positive COVID-19 cases. Luckily our classroom is still doing well :). The students in our class really do a wonderful job keeping their masks on, and practice social distancing. They continue to impress me:). Throughout the week students follow a schedule with their group including; listening to reading, reading to self, writing about their reading, completing vocabulary work, and reading in guided reading groups (with the teacher). This week we will focus on cause and effect. We will, of course, continue reading our class novel, Out of My Mind, students will complete reading comprehension activities paired with the book. In writing we will continue opinion writing. The class will read a debate article about whether or not social media is good for society. Students will identify elements of Opinion/Argumentative Writing in the text, and use the article to think about what side they would take. In Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. In this week’s lessons, students will use a length or number-line model to recognize or generate equivalent fractions. They will also generalize their work with visual fraction models to explain why a fraction is equivalent to another. In Science the class will continue with the Unit on the Birth of Rocks. In this week’s lesson, students will learn about the types, causes, and dangers of landslides.
