Good Evening Room 209 Students and Families, I hope you all had a nice weekend and were able to enjoy the beautiful winter wonderland that came our way! CPS has formally stated that the district will continue with remote learning as negotiations continue. Teachers and staff look forward to continuing our work, teaching, and keeping our students learning. We will continue to follow the schedule we have been following all year with the students in our homeroom. Business will be as usual for Room 209, until further notice :). Notes and Reminders:
Weekly Overview of Assignments In Reading we will begin our Mystery Unit! We will review what students know about mysteries, elements of a mystery, and important vocabulary. This week the class will read and complete paired activities about the mystery, The Loch Ness Monster. Small group reading will focus on making inferences as they read. During Writing, students will be introduced to our next writing assignment-Narrative Mysteries. This week students will create characters they will use in their stories, complete a plot mountain, and learn to write a luring lead. In Math students will begin Unit 5- Fraction and Mixed Number Computation; Measurement. Students will explore decomposing fractions into sums of fractions and add fractions with like and unlike denominators to solve number stories. This week we will circle back to Science. In this unit, students will complete lessons that help develop the idea that sound is an actual thing, a wave of vibrations traveling through the air. Students will make the connection between sounds and vibration during this week’s activities. Homework

Weekly Overview of Assignments This week in Reading students will finish working on their Wax Museum projects. This week students will write, practice, and present their Wax Museum monologues. During small group time, students will focus on summarizing and making inferences as they read. During Writing, students will write their research papers. The class will have the week to draft, edit/revise, and publish their work. Students will also learn how to format the sources they used to include in bibliographies. In Math students will continue reviewing Unit 4-Multidigit Multiplciation. The class will take the Unit 4 Assessment later in the week. Students will also have the opportunity to review concepts learned from this year. We will start Unit 5 next week. In Social Studies, we will continue studying and discussing current events focused on the presidential inauguration and other important events. Homework

Weekly Overview of Assignments This week in Reading students will continue working on their Wax Museum projects. This week students will make a comic strip story about the person they are researching, and write letters to that person as well. During small group time, students will focus on summarizing as they read. During writing, we will continue research writing about African American History. This week, students will complete a graphic organizer outlining their writing and their sources. Students will also begin writing their research papers, and learn how to cite their sources appropriately. In Math we will finish studying Unit 4- Multidigit Multiplication. Students use the Partial-Products Multiplication strategy to solve problems. They will also be introduced and explore the lattice method while solving multiplication problems. We will review the unit throughout the week, and students will take the Unit 4 Assessment in the beginning of next week. In Social Studies, we will begin the week by identifying dreams and aspirations Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had for us and our country. Students will compare his dreams to what is going on in our country now, and identify changes that need to be made. We will also study current events focused on the presidential inauguration. Weekly Overview of Assignments This week in Reading we will continue studying biographies. The grade level will culminate this reading unit by participating in the traditional 4th Grade Wax Museum! Students will be introduced to this assignment this week-instructions, expectations, and rubrics. Each student will be expected to choose an influential person to research, write a monologue about that person, and make a presentation that will be added to our Virtual Wax Museum! Students will spend the week researching the influential person they chose. During guided reading, reading groups will continue to identify the main idea and supporting details of the text read. During writing, we will continue research writing. This week, students will research topics about African American History and begin writing their research paper. We will review paraphrasing and students will also learn how to cite their sources and write a bibliography to include with their final draft. This week in Math we will continue studying Unit 4- Multidigit Multiplication. Students use the Partial-Products Multiplication strategy to solve problems. Students find the area of rectangles and rectilinear figures using multi digit computation, and solve multistep multiplication number stories. This week in Science, students will explore the brain’s role in receiving information from the senses, processing that information, and controlling the muscles to enable movement. The class will watch an activity where human reflexes are tested. We will also learn about how we process information in our brains and then respond to that information in different ways. Last week, we discussed the tragic attack that took place on our nation’s capital. This week we will continue discussing this topic and related current events. Homework

Weekly Overview of Assignments In Reading we will read and learn about Katherine Johnson. The class will create a timeline including important events about Katherine Johnson. Students will work on the timeline and present their timelines during reading class. During guided reading, students will identify the main idea and supporting details of the text read. During writing, we will begin research writing! Students will research topics about African American History. In addition, students will learn how to cite sources and paraphrase their research. This week in Math we will continue studying Unit 4- Multidigit Multiplication. Students will be introduced and solve problems using the Partial-Products Multiplication strategy. We will also further explore the metric system and convert kilograms to grams. In addition, the class will solve multistep number stories. This week in Science, students will discover the basics of how their eyes work, and figure out some of the causes of vision problems. Students will watch an activity where a working model of a human eye is developed. A magnifying lens is used as a model of the cornea to explore how the structure of this lens is related to the function of our eyes. We will also read additional paired readings related to these topics. Homework
