I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and had a Happy Thanksgiving! Notes and Reminders:
Weekly Overview of Assignments This week in Reading students will review and identify cause and effect as we read. We will focus on cause and effect while reading Out of My Mind and during small groups. Students will continue reading and studying biographies in their guided reading groups. In Writing students will continue writing opinion essays! The class will begin the week by reviewing the parts of opinion writing. Students will use the article, “Should students wear uniforms?,” to write an essay about their opinion on the topic. This week in Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. Students will read and write decimals to the hundredths, and explore decimals in the context of measurement. Students will be introduced to millimeters and convert from centimeters to millimeters. This week we will rotate back to Science. We will begin a new unit on the human body, senses, and the brain. This week students will discover how their muscles control their bones, and in effect move their bodies. Homework

I hope everyone is having a nice and relaxing weekend! Notes and Reminders:
Weekly Overview of Assignments With the short week, we will stick to our routine for the most part, and add in some new activities! This week in Reading the class will continue to read and discuss our class novel, Out of My Mind. We will meet with all guided reading groups on Monday and Tuesday to continue reading and studying biographies (times will be adjusted to accommodate all students due to the shortened week, but will not go outside of our normal scheduled screen time). In Writing students will complete an fun self-portrait activity, which allows them to express and describe themselves! Students will also write Thankful poems. In Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. This week students will be introduced and work to solve problems involving the relationship between fractions and decimals. In Social Studies students will learn and review the history of Thanksgiving. In addition, we will learn why turkey has become a Thanksgiving staple in many homes. Homework

Weekly Overview of Assignments This week in Reading students will review and identify the main idea and supporting details of what they read. We will focus on identifying the main idea while reading U and during small groups. Students will continue reading and studying biographies in their guided reading groups. In Writing students will continue writing opinion essays! The class will begin the week by reviewing the parts of opinion writing. Students will use the article, “Is Social Media Good for Society?,” to write an essay about their opinion on the topic. This week in Math we will continue studying Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. Students will use mathematical models to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators to justify reasoning. We will also compare fractions in number stories, and learn strategies to order fractions and place them accurately on the number lines. This week we will rotate back to Social Studies. The class will begin studying the US states and capitals. We will begin the week reading and discussing facts about our state, Illinois. Students will pick a person they know from another state to write letters to. Students will write letters including information about Illinois, and questions about the state where the letter is being sent. Students will be responsible for mailing the letter after Thursday. Step by step instructions will be given throughout the week. Homework

This week in Reading students will review using context clues and prefixes/suffixes to define challenging vocabulary. We will focus on vocabulary while reading Out of My Mind and during small groups. We will also start our biography unit! Students will begin reading biographies in their guided reading groups. In Writing we will begin Opinion Writing! The class will begin the week by reviewing parts of opinion writing. Students will use the article, “Should the Voting Age Be Lowered,” to write an opinion piece about whether or not the voting age should be lowered. This week in Math we will begin Unit 3- Fractions and Decimals. Students will extend their understanding of fraction equivalence by solving number stories involving equally shared quantities. We will use an area and number-line model to recognize, generate, and explain equivalent fractions. In Science students will learn about the types, causes, and dangers of landslides. Students will complete an activity where they are faced with the engineering problems of protecting a house from a landslide and preventing a landslide from happening. Homework

Students do not have school on Tuesday (Election Day) and Friday (School Improvement Day). Notes and Reminders:
This week in Reading we will review different reading focuses while reading Out of My Mind. Students will identify character traits, the main idea, and write an effective summary. Since we have a short week, students will not meet for guided reading. During small group time students will have an opportunity to receive additional help with any work from this quarter. This week in Writing students will continue Responding to a Prompt. The class will read the text “There's Plenty of Fish in the Trees .” Students will consider what the story would be like if it were told from the other character’s point of view? Students will think about how descriptions of the setting and events might change based on the point of view of the person telling the story. In addition, the class will respond to daily journal prompts. In Math we will finish working on Unit 2- Multiplication and Geometry. We will end the unit by classifying quadrilaterals by their properties, and explore line symmetry in nature, objects, and shapes. We will review the concepts studied throughout the Unit. Students will take the Unit Assessment at the end of the week. This week in Social Studies, students will study current events based on the election. The class will also study a mystery science about the biggest spider in the world! Homework
